Second Step Offers Guided Tours of Homes

§ October 18th, 2011 § Filed under Events § No Comments

Martha Brett, the Landscape Maintenance and Mentor Program Coordinator for Second Step Housing, will be offering a quarterly home tour starting October 25th at 3pm. The tours are a great way for donors, volunteers, community members, or potential residents, to see a selection of Second Step’s properties, where residents have a hand in maintenance.

At Second Step, it begins with the housing. The quarterly tour will offer an opportunity to witness and see firsthand the pride and integrity that not only our staff has in our homes, but that our residents have as well.

Our residents are often touched and surprised when they arrive at a home with a vegetable garden, a beautiful front porch and a garden bed full of pink dahlias in the front yard, only to find out, this is where they will sleep, this is their new home.

In our housing program, each resident is required to mow the lawn, pull weeds and keep the property tidy. Many exceed that expectation and participate in the planting and caring for beautiful flowers, as well as planting, growing and harvesting their very own vegetable gardens. Martha’s tours will exemplify our dedication to our mission with another example of how we encourage and teach the pride of home not only on the inside, but on the outside, too.

At Second Step Housing, we believe that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to live. We believe that everyone deserves a home. We hope to create a home that gives them peace and security. The smell of blackberry jam fills the homes where the berries weigh heavy on the bushes in the backyard. The voices and laughter of children fills the playground, sandboxes, and breezeways where the families barbeque together. The pathways that lead to the front doors are lined with marigolds. Little children dig their hands into the strawberry plants lining the walkway up to one of the homes. Rocking chairs, pumpkins, signs of the season and flower pots obviously planted and cared for with love decorate the porches. When the women look out the windows of their home, they see hanging pots, gardens full of fresh vegetables and flowers surrounding a quaint little bird house. Mature, beautiful magnolia and birch trees line sidewalks and provide shaded areas in the yards.

The community, Board Members, donors and potential donors and friends of the organization are all invited to join Martha on one of her quarterly home tours. Tours will always meet at the Second Step Housing Main Office and a map of the tour will be provided in your presentation folder upon arrival.
