Yards and Gardens Expands and Blooms

Yards and Gardens has had a busy year! Some of our recent accomplishments include:

  • Installing a community garden to benefit the families living in our supportive permanent housing.
  • Rehabilitating an unattractive and large, unused space along a sidewalk by planting an abundance of green peppers, tomatoes, eggplants,  squash, and pumpkins.
  • Using the lasagna garden technique, and partnering with Clark County Juvenile Court RCS youth, we created a garden to grow vegetables that were used in the annual Preserving and Sharing your Bounty celebration.
  • Planting a vegetable garden with the help of the VanRidge Garden Club and YWCA Safe Choice program residents.
  • Conducting a spring garden planning workshop for 25 residents and guests to develop their individual plans for the yard and garden at their residence.  In addition, the participants made colorful garden signs to beautify their gardens and identify their crops.

To celebrate a successful year, the program ended with a fall harvest workshop where participants learned food preserving techniques like canning, freezing, and root cellar storage.

We are grateful to the volunteers who provide monthly and seasonal maintenance support and guidance to the residents.  The Yards and Gardens program is successful in large part to the dedicated team of volunteers from the community! Thank you!

About Yards and Gardens
Yards and Gardens focuses on introducing residents to the benefits of creating and maintaining a garden. Volunteers who have a passion for gardening are matched with residents to help guide them in planning, planting, caring for and harvesting their garden bounty. The program also highlights nutrition, meal planning and food storage.  Having a safe, dry, warm home is important for everyone, but having one that is also welcoming and beautiful can be equally satisfying. Yards and Gardens is part of the Women Helping Women program and is supported by the Master Gardener Foundation of Clark County.
